Sei Whale
The Sei whale is a subclass specie of whales found throughout all oceans except in polar or tropical climates. This massive whale can reach up to sixty-six feet and over twenty tons in weight. They can also swim up to speeds of thirty miles an hour. Whales are considered to be at the top of the food chain, contributing greatly toward a balanced, healthy ecosystem.
Despite their ecological importance, the Sei whale is considered endangered due to ocean pollution and whaling. While commercial whaling was deemed illegal and halted after 1986, certain countries still hunt whales for research. While commercial whaling is banned, these countries found a legal loophole by researching the deceased whales instead of burning their fat for oil. The International Whaling Commission (IWC) regulates whaling and monitors marine threats, such as research whaling. They aim to stop whaling forever, regardless of research purposes. By supporting their efforts, we can save the Sei whale from extinction.
