Giant Panda
I think we have all been to a zoo before and gotten excited to see one of the biggest attractions: the giant panda bears. These lovable bears have distinctive black and white fur coats, making them interesting to look at. While these bears are comfortable in captivity, the wild giant pandas are considered vulnerable to extinction due to habitat loss.
Giant pandas are considered a national treasure in their native lands of China. These bears live in the forest mountains of southwest China, where they consume twenty-six to eighty-four pounds of bamboo a day! Due to increased infrastructure and deforestation surrounding their native habitat, the giant pandas have lost access to the vast amount of bamboo they utilize as their food source. Luckily, the Chinese government is trying to protect these national treasures from endangerment y establishing panda nature preserves. Currently, only sixty-seven percent of giant pandas are protected on these reserves. By supporting and funding these preserves, we can hopefully save the giant pandas from extinction.
