Desert Rain Frog
The Desert Rain Frog is the most unique frog I have stumbled across on the internet. A Desert Rain Frog is described as a "squat, rotund frog with short limbs and large, prominent eyes." (1) They basically are a bouncy ball with legs. Besides their unique look, they have various other qualities that make them stand out, including their sound and lack of hop. Desert Rain Frogs omit a squeak, similar to a squeaky toy, rather than a traditional croak. Due to their body mass, they are unable to hop like a traditional frog and choose to run instead.
If you find this creature to be uniquely adorable like I do, there are many ways we can help save their species from extinction. These frogs are found on the sandy shores of South Africa, which are unfortunately being destroyed due to over-mining. There is a proposed plan to deem the Orange River mouth at Alexander Bay as a protected area for wildlife. The public draft states, "Proposed rehabilitation activities will-provide the habitat necessary to start attracting larger number
of wildlife- in future." (2) By supporting this plan and educating the public on endangered species, we can hopefully save these frogs, and other wildlife, from extinction.
