Blue Whale
The blue whale is a magnificent and ginormous whale found off the coasts of Southern Chile, the Gulf of California, and the Coral Triangle. This beautiful marine animal is the largest animal on Earth; and weighs over two hundred tons! That is equivalent to thirty-three elephants! With a big body comes a big appetite, which stands true for this whale. Blue whales eat over four tons of krill a day. They are considered at the top of the food chain, benefiting the marine ecosystem. With such an important role and massive size, it is surprising they are considered endangered.
The blue whale is considered endangered due to the overfishing of its food source and previous whaling (hunting whales for oil). While commercial whaling became illegal in 1966, overfishing of krill is still a problem for this species. Without an abundant food source, these whales will become extinct. By supporting organizations that aim to stop overfishing issues and advocating for more protected wildlife areas, we can protect them from extinction.
